This test measures the ability of paper, paperboard, or combined board to resist the penetration of a hydraulic ram that is reminiscent of a human thumb.
The ram is pressed against the surface of the paper products that are clamped between two circular clamps. The test results are pounds per square inch of pressure within the hydraulic ram that are required to burst the paper product.
