Bendsten smoothness is an air leak smoothness tester that responds to relatively large
surface imperfections or undulations. A smoother, more level surface results in
a lower Bendsten smoothness. This instrument is similar to the Sheffield smoothness
tester, but it has the ability to measure smoothness or roughness of paper and paperboard
that is too rough for measurement with the Sheffield smoothness tester. It is used
in Europe more than in the USA.
